Prayer Verses

Secret or Public Prayers?

Many prayers in the Bible are alone with God.   Jesus teaches us to pray in secret. Matthew 6:6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. But understand the context; here the religious leaders liked to be seen praying, not so God would see hem, but so man would see them (and look spiritual). So public prayer especially in our churches is wonderful, see Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.

Thy Words Were Heard – Answered Prayer

Daniel 10:12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel; for from the first day that thou didst set thy heart to understand, and to humble thyself before thy God, thy words were heard: and I am come for thy words’ sake. 13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days; but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me: and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

Look at answered prayer here, a humble prayer from Daniel yields results from God in spite of opposition from the enemy.   The enemy may slow prayer, but he cannot stop the answers.  God is God, He created the earth and the universe, eventually He will in every place in the universe be the LORD.  So don’t worry about a tiny little spot in the universe called earth where the enemy appears to have some temporary victory, eventually God will win.  At the end of the Bible God is on the throne and fully rulling in the universe and on this tiny earth.

Don’t ever forget in Psalms 24:1 The earth is Jehovah’s, and the fulness thereof; The world, and they that dwell therein.   2 For he hath founded it upon the seas, And established it upon the floods.

Prayer in Daniel, just the verses

Daniel 9:3 Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.
Daniel 9:13 “”As [it is] written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us; yet we have not made our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand Your truth
Daniel 9:17 “Now therefore, our God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, and for the Lord’s sake cause Your face to shine on Your sanctuary, which is desolate.
Daniel 9:21 yes, while I [was] speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering.

Its great to just look at the verses related to prayer in the Old testament book of Daniel.

More Prayer in the Morning…

Psalms 88:13 But to You I have cried out, O LORD, And in the morning my prayer comes before You. Have you ever woken up early in the morning with lots on your mind?  Well many times this is the Lord calling us to prayer.  Prayer in the morning is a wonderful time of  intimate fellowship with God.  Sometimes its just a groan or a cry or just a sigh.  But it is still prayer.

Prayer – Waiting for God to Move

God intends to fulfill every desire placed in us by the Holy Spirit.  We just need prayer,  waiting for God’s timing and God’s way.  Trying to adjust God’s timing is like trying to move the hands on a clock, we can move the hands, but we cannot actually change the time.

Just remember Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Also remember Genesis 13:14 And the LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are — northward, southward, eastward, and westward;   15 “for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.

Hannah’s Prayer of Praise and Thanksgiving

Hannah’s prayer helps us understand that prayer is not always asking (1 Sam. 2:1-10). The biblical author called what she said prayer, but her prayer did not contain any petition, only praise and thanksgiving.   This helps up understand prayer from another angle.

Notice this long prayer:

1 Samuel 2:1 And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart exulteth in Jehovah, my horn is lifted up in Jehovah; my mouth is opened wide over mine enemies; for I rejoice in thy salvation. 2 There is none holy as Jehovah, for there is none beside thee, neither is there any rock like our God.   3 Do not multiply your words of pride, let not vain-glory come out of your mouth; For Jehovah is a ùGod of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.   4 The bow of the mighty is broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength.   5 They that were full have hired themselves out for bread; and the hungry are so no more: Even the barren beareth seven, and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.   6 Jehovah killeth, and maketh alive; he bringeth down to Sheol, and bringeth up.   7 Jehovah maketh poor, and maketh rich, he bringeth low, also he lifteth up:   8 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust; from the dung-hill he lifteth up the needy, To set him among nobles; and he maketh them inherit a throne of glory; For the pillars of the earth are Jehovah’s, and he hath set the world upon them.   9 He keepeth the feet of his saints, but the wicked are silenced in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.   10 They that strive with Jehovah shall be broken to pieces; in the heavens will he thunder upon them. Jehovah will judge the ends of the earth; and he will give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.
