My notes on the silver bullet in electronic publishing or how to be successful in electronic publishing.
- Secret number 1 - Get into as many digital channels as possible with all your titles. Don't forget your valuable backlist.
- Secret number 2 - Publishers should consider 10-15 secular and 4-6 Bible software electronic channels.
- Secret number 3 - Bibles and Bible reference materials do best when distributed through Bible Software channels such as Olive Tree Bible Software.
- Secret number 4 - Be prepared - Electronic is still in the baby stage... Transition from print to electronic will be very slow...
- Secret number 5 - Exclusive deals with electronic channels will hurt the publishers. The channels are very fragmented with users picking every type of channel and reader. Consider an electronic channel to be like a bookstore chain. Exclusive deals mean some titles will not go to some users. With the paper book all books have the same user interface and reader system; not so with electronic.
- Secret number 6 - Apps (iPhone, iPad, Mac and PC Android, etc) are like web site or bookstores, they need marketing to bring people to them, they need to offer something unique to get attention. Just doing an app does not quarantee success. Just like doing a web site does not quarantee success.
- Secret number 7 - Each app is a separate digital channel. So for example on iPad you have Kindle, iBook, Olive Tree, and apps done by a variety of publishers. These are all separate digital channels.
- Secret number 8 - User experience is important, most users are shopping for a library system they can invest in for the future.
